Restoring Integrity and Strength to Compromised Teeth

dental crownsYour teeth are coated with the most durable substance in the human body, enamel. However, extreme conditions, like crushing pressure, temperature fluctuations, and over 600 bacteria in your mouth can compromise a tooth’s integrity. Deep dental decay (caries) or a tooth fracture (crack) may necessitate a dental crown.

Dr. Galligan works with an excellent dental lab where ceramists use quality, biocompatible materials to custom fabricate dental crowns. These restorations fit over the portion of a tooth that extends above the gum line. They protect the tooth, restore structure, and renew strength.

For front teeth, which don’t have to endure significant pressure, Dr. Galligan uses all-porcelain crowns. Our lab will tint the porcelain to match your surrounding teeth, so once in place, the crown will look natural in your smile. Teeth further back in the mouth require a stronger material, such as porcelain over metal or all metal. At your assessment, Dr. Galligan will explain which type of crown will suit your situation. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.

Generally, a crown requires two visits to design and place. At your initial appointment, Dr. Galligan will prepare your tooth for the crown and take an impression for the ceramist. You’ll wear a temporary crown for a brief time. After we receive your custom crown from the dental lab, you’ll return to our Raleigh dental office for permanent placement of the restoration. Dr. Galligan will affix the crown, then assess your occlusion (how upper and lower teeth fit together) and make adjustments, if necessary, for optimal results.
